Description
African Painting
African art” as a term usually refers primarily to the art of Sub-Saharan Africa. The artistic trends and periods of the African Mediterranean coast, or the art of Muslim and Christian countries in Africa, have their own names, traditions and artistic movements. African art has many characteristics. Namely some of which include creative expressionism over realism. Prevalence of drawing and sculpting human figures, greater focus on sculpture than painting, abstract themes and representations, blending of visual arts and performing arts (as in fine and performing arts) .
Description of african painting
The term African art does not usually include the art of the North African regions along the Mediterranean coast. Because the area has long been part of a different tradition. For more than a millennium, regional art has been a part of Berber or Islamic art. Although with many specific local characteristics.
Ethiopian art, with its long Christian tradition, also differs from much of Africa, where traditional African religion (with Islam in the north) was dominant well into the 20th century.
Historically, wood and other natural materials have been the basis for making African sculptures. Although some areas have old pottery and rare metal sculptures. Scientists discovered some of the earliest decorative objects, such as seashell beads and paint evidence. All of these date back to the Middle Stone Age.
Masks are an important element in the art of many people, along with human figures, and are often highly stylized. There are many variations of style. Which often varies within the context of the same origin and depends on the use of the object. Direct images of gods are relatively rare, but people make masks specifically for ritual ceremonies. Since the late 19th century there has been an increase in the amount of African art in Western collections. The best works are displayed as part of colonial history.
African Art
African art had an important influence on European Modernist art, inspired by their interest in abstract depiction. It is this appreciation of African sculpture that is associated with the concept of “African art”. As seen by European and American artists and art historians.
African art depicts modern and historical painting, sculpture, installations, and other visual culture. From natives or natives of Africa and the African continent. The definition may also include African diaspora art. This includes African American, Caribbean or South American art inspired by African traditions. Despite this diversity, there is a unifying artistic theme present, when considering the totality of the visual culture of the African continent.
